G&S Austin is proud to present their summer grand production of Patience, the sixth operatic collaboration by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. This show has some of Gilbert’s finest comedy and Sullivan’s most captivating tunes, adding up to a masterwork fully equal to their very best. It has wit, charm, poetry, and a delightfully complicated love triangle supplying plenty of laughs, swoons, and queries on what's aesthetically in - and what's out. Written in 1881, Gilbert wrote about influencer culture long before our time. In a world obsessed with appearances, Patience reminds us that sincerity never goes out of style. 512-472-4772

    Thursdays-Saturdays, 8-10 p.m., Fri., June 19, 8-10 p.m. and Sat., June 20, 8-10 p.m.

    Dell Fine Arts Center

5901 Southwest Pkwy., Austin West Austin and Lakeway

Pulitzer prize-winning dance critic Sarah L Kaufman described Ishida’s work as “deeply poignant” and “remarkable”. "waiting / REX" is a bold world premiere contemporary dance double bill by ISHIDA, bringing into visceral dialogue the works of Samuel Beckett and Sophocles. Reimagining "Waiting for Godot" and "Oedipus Tyrannus" through a striking physical lens, these classics become charged, embodied experiences. "waiting" suspends you in cycles of repetition, humor, and longing, while "REX" unfolds a haunting, surreal search for identity, power, and truth. Together, they form an emotionally charged diptych—a rare and transformative encounter of lessons in blindness shaped through meticulous physicality. 512/962-2633

I don’t often take the bus around town, but I always let it merge ahead of me. I like when the bus driver waves at me. If you want your kids to carry their whimsical spirit into these streets, and life in general, head to the Blanton for a reading of Natalia Shaloshvili’s Miss Leoparda – selected from Alienated Majesty’s international and small-press children's book collection. The story tells a tale of the titular feline bus driver, whose once-loyal passengers suddenly forgo the bus in favor of cars. You’ll learn two lessons: Community is important, and sustainability is the goal… 512/471-5482

Here’s a sales pitch for ya: What if a movie combined the voyeurism of Rear Window, the mystery of Vertigo, and the splashy Eighties schlock of a Frankie Goes to Hollywood music video? You’d certainly have to see it to believe it, and see it you shall with Brain De Palma’s 1984 neo-noir. While the box office at time of release wasn’t exactly boffo, the movie did score star Melanie Griffith a Golden Globes Best Supporting Actress nom for her portrayal of erotic actress Holly Body. Whether you’re looking to spill your lunch or just morbidly curious, the sicko programmers at AFS Cinema have you covered with a Friday nightmare promising a dose of silver-screen sadism. Shozin Fukui’s deceptively named Rubber’s Lover (1996) pairs cyberpunk and body horror in the twisted story of a scientific research group pushing abducted test subjects to their mental and physical limits. At a mercifully brief 91 minutes, you’ll have time to hit the bars and drink away the trauma with whoever was naive enough to go with you. First round’s on you. – Adam Elayan 512/322-0145

If you thought Alejandro González Iñárritu didn’t start making punishing movies until he contemplated the weight of a human soul (21 Grams) or what it’s like to wrestle a bear to the ground (The Revenant), his brutalizing debut feature puts the lie to that in the very first scene, when a baby-faced Gael García Bernal instigates a car crash that kicks off the action in this triptych drama set in Mexico City. A forewarning to animal lovers: Much of that action involves a dogfighting ring, and master cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto isn't shy about showing the resulting carnage. Radio/East on Montopolis, new home to Levitation (YESSS), debuted in 2023 across three stages over nearly two acres. Hotel Vegas

1502 E. Sixth, Austin Lower East

Not in the Face was an accidental breakout. Fifteen years ago, Jonathan Terrell and Wes Cargal felt the need to rock out, but magic happened when the duo began hitting local stages. Terrell’s feral frontman howl and onstage hyperglam sexuality maxed out to Cargal’s percussive grooves, and erupted in a party of vintage rock swinging backbeats. NitF only released one LP (2011’s Bikini), but “Downtown Girl” will forever be a summer sleaze banger. Eagle Claw’s metal dirge of new Ageless | Godmaker 10” and Golden Boy John Wesley Coleman’s Broken Hearts Club fill out the reunion bill. – Doug Freeman 512/524-1584

Straight from your high school reading list comes a chance to see what happens when the Younger family's dream is actually deferred. And, like every curriculum play, it’s much better as writer Lorraine Hansberry meant it to be seen – as a living work on the stage. It’s more exhilarating to actually watch the Youngers receive a windfall and deal with the inevitable fallout. The wrestle between dreams and reality feels vital when viewed in person. Identity crises, a tale as prescient as ever, pops when the actors craft that struggle right before your eyes. With Raisin, City Theatre’s picked… 512/478-2565

How often do you find yourself urgently texting the group chat while at a nearly empty event, “Where are you???” Thus, the impetus behind Austin’s “Cultural Tour Guide” Where Y’all At Though becomes clear. And, being that its guidance focuses on the underserved Black Austinite community, the need for the group’s nonstop event organizing, recos, and collabs is increased tenfold during the Juneteenth season. The party goes into hyperdrive with a nearly two-week schedule that spans multiple vibes: a gallery tour for RichesArt’s fifth anniversary to an adult field day with We Outside, Remix Collective, and Raasin in the Sun;…

Literally translated as “Fruits of Death,” this play from Glass Half Full explores what can arise from decay, drawing on mycology and curanderismo to tell the story of a young Guatemalan woman named Ixq’anil and her aunt Adela finding their way through a dark time. Movement and puppetry artists tell the tale that finds the pair exploring fungi, science, and Indigenous wisdom on their journey. This version draws on a variety of resources and builds on their work-in-progress showing at Crashbox last fall, and a mix of languages are spoken in the performance, but they took great care to ensure… 512/840-1804

    Through June 14

    Zach Theatre's Whisenhunt Stage

1510 Toomey, Austin South Lamar and Barton Springs

Take a classic story of robbing the rich to give to the poor, dip it in deep Southern Gothic sensibilities, and glaze it with an uproarious bluegrass soundtrack, and there you have this musical adventure. The Robber Bridegroom follows Jamie Lockhart as he juggles dual identities of Southern gent and roguish bandit. There’s intrigue with mistaken identities and light scheming. There’s a little love and lots of lust. And it’s all courtesy of the award-winning Alchemy Theatre, backing up talented singers with a live band. It’s guaranteed to set your toes a-tapping and your shoulders a-waggling. – Cat McCarrey

    June 12-21

    McCallum Performing Arts Theatre

    5600 Sunshine Dr., Austin Midtown

Prithee pretty maidens and perfect gentlemen, prepare for a tale most lovely and pure as truth, love, and beauty are most skillfully skewered by the supreme satirists themselves. It’s Gilbert and Sullivan, the sweet songsters of yore, trilling a tapestry of art so fine it whips women into frenzy. Behold the saga of perfect poets Bunthorne and Grosvenor: Their work narrowly sticks to their lofty ideals, eschewing reason in favor of naught but adherence to aesthetics. Such stridence throws life into chaos. Indeed, truth AND beauty AND love get lost in the poets’ labyrinthian logic of art above all. There…

In cleanly crafted sculpture, neon-illuminated statements, video pieces, and primary-colored works on paper, Sable Elyse Smith dissects the systems of power hidden in plain sight. The Contemporary’s Jones Center welcomes the New York-based artist’s first solo exhibition in Texas. Through a collection building on postminimal concepts, “Clockwork” shares Smith’s distinct interdisciplinary, socially attuned perspective with Austin audiences. With precise repetition, deliberate disorientation, and contrasts of form and color, each piece reflects on the cyclical cultural forces ticking beneath our daily lives. – Caroline Drew 512/453-5312

So adding food to some already tasty theatre? Genius. Austin Playhouse increases their theatrical temperature with Seared, turning up the heat by adding live cooking demonstrations to delicious drama. On the collection’s first public tour, H-E-B heir Charles Butt shares over 80 works by America’s most prominent modernist artists. Visual trickery is the parlance of magic, mysticism, and film. But aren’t those all sort of similar realms? Film and art lends itself perfectly to the unknown, reveling in the creation of one thing that appears as something else. Mexico City’s Fabiola Torres-Alzaga explores those thresholds, creating art that revels in the reveal, celebrates concealment, and loves the liminal spaces between what’s real and what’s presented to the audience. Using an interdisciplinary blend of mediums, Torres-Alzaga begs the audience to consider the beauty in the in-between. – Cat McCarrey 512/300-8217

No stranger to the walls of Wally Workman, Diana Greenberg has been exploring shape and structure for over a decade. Her often-neutral canvases offer as much insight as the figures implied by the paint (and other media) on them. Ranging from floral arrangements to highway overpasses, Greenberg’s vivid brushstrokes offer a sense of energy that’s both kinetic and potential, in turn offering a sense of stillness and the possibility of movement. The effect, however, is almost always a sense of calm that draws you in. – James Renovitch 512/472-7428
