Most Outside the Mainstream Gay Masses Gallery

MASS Gallery

When a gallery says they center LGBTQIA artists, that can often mean that every so often they run a gay artist’s work – usually during June. Not so for the volunteer-run democratic collective that is MASS Gallery. MASS exhibits LGBTQIA creators’ work year-round that explores everything from religious trauma through a church basement re-creation to a show featuring erotic photographer David Hurles’ rough trade snapshots not seen since 2010. In addition to a pretty gay-ass leadership team – hello, Beth Schindler, of the Lesbian Wedding Schindlers – the gallery’s continuing commitment to platforming queer art allows a greater gay cultural consciousness to materialize. There’s a lotta ways to be gay, and a lotta ways to make gay art: MASS attempts to show them all.
