This public art initiative by the Mosaic Workshop gives Austin artists the opportunity to honor cultural leaders of Central Texas through mosaic portraiture, with more than 45 icons like Flaco Jiménez, Jackie Venson, and Alice Ming Fei Yi now immortalized around town. Workshop co-founders J Muzacz and Carmen Rangel bring their mission of empowerment through creativity to every piece of their multifaceted workroom, from an open studio stocked with sustainably sourced materials to site-specific murals celebrating community identity. The individual artworks alone are impressive, but – as with the namesake mosaic – it’s when you take in the scope of the whole project that the impact is most profound.
