Though launched in 1988 by the late Joe W. Bratcher as a works-in-translation press, current Host editors Annar Veröld and Claire Bowman now focus on publishing poetry by marginalized voices. The through line? “Sharing literature that otherwise would not ever be found,” Veröld told the Chronicle in 2024. In curating their written roster and their I Scream Social reading series, the publishers prioritize women, nonbinary, and BIPOC writers. “We know our power is limited,” Bowman said last year. “But we also know that even just something as simple as a chapbook can literally change someone’s life.”
