Shiba Inus. You’ve seen them rise to fame as the “doge” meme and become the face of a cryptocurrency, but in case you were wondering, yes, they are an actual breed. In fact, there are lots of them here in Austin! Every year, the Japan-America Society of Greater Austin hosts a day of fun in serene Pease Park to honor our adorable, very fluffy, foxlike friends with events like origami crafting, a dog talent show, lessons on how to speak Japanese to your dog, and, of course, the Shiba Inu parade walk. We give the Shiba Inu “Komyuniti” Spirit Award to JASGA for their dedication to celebrating Japanese culture, community spirit, and the beloved Shiba Inu. As the meme goes: WOW! Much fun. Such honor.
