Austin Outlaws, one of the longest-running full-contact women’s football teams in the United States, have embodied the famous phrase “for the love of the game.” Remarkably, president/coach Lily Messina has been with the 501(c)(3) nonprofit since its first season. The semi-pro squad celebrated their 25th anniversary this year, with City Council Member José Velásquez proclaiming May 31, 2025, as “Austin Outlaw Day.” Though this past season didn’t go as hoped on the gridiron, the Outlaws won the inaugural Independent Women’s Football League championship in 2001. The team currently competes in the Women’s Football Alliance.
