This year’s Texas Longhorns softball team turned heartbreak into motivation en route to the program’s first national championship. The sixth-seeded Longhorns avenged last year’s finals loss to bitter rivals Oklahoma by defeating the Sooners for the first time in the Women’s College World Series. From there, a semifinals victory against the other UT, the Tennessee Volunteers, set up an exciting championship matchup against Texas Tech and their million-dollar ace, NiJaree Canady. Texas ran out to an early five-run lead against the Red Raiders in their winner-take-all Game 3 – televised to an average audience of 2.4 million viewers according to ESPN – and never looked back.
