  • Image: Sophia Bush: And I Will Tell You Mine

    Fri., Oct. 30

    First Baptist Church of Austin

    901 Trinity, Austin Downtown

Millennials probably know Sophia Bush best for one of her first major roles onscreen, Brooke Davis on teen drama One Tree Hill (2003-2012), whose personal growth takes her character arc from superficial cheerleader to family-oriented business owner. Bush’s offscreen story reflects impressive growth as well – the actress balances film and TV roles with entrepreneurship and work in progressive activism, racking up a fascinating CV and collecting enough powerful stories to fill a book. Celebrate its release and hear from Bush in conversation with professor/author/podcaster Brené Brown. – Kat McNevins 512/476-2625

    Fri., Oct. 30

    Ani's Day & Night

    7107 E. Riverside, Austin South

You ever dance so hard that your moves get scary? Swing on over to this jazzy production kept rolling and reeling by live music from the Revelators and Rent Party. Four on the Floor’s Matt and Laura lead swing dance lessons for the uninitiated – or those wanting a refresher course – and Austin Shag Jam does a frighteningly fun performance. But fancy footwork ain’t the only spirit being raised here, as this Riverside coffee bar also hosts a memorial altar for honoring those who’ve passed on. Wear your best vintage disguise and you may win the night’s costume contest… (737) 738-1850

    Oct. 30-Nov. 5

    AFS Cinema

    6406 N. I-35 Ste. 3100, Austin Midtown

It’s the David Lynch film with Nicolas Cage in it. Need I say more? In his only collaboration with the late great filmmaker, Cage’s Elvis-singing, snakeskin jacket-treasuring convicted felon treks across the Southern United States with longtime Lynch muse Laura Dern at his side, as the star-crossed lovers flee the devil they know (Diane Ladd, on the edge) and face plenty of new devils along the way (Willem Dafoe at perhaps his most petrifying). Though adapted from Barry Gifford’s novel of the same name, Harry Dean Stanton, Isabella Rossellini, Sheryl Lee, and, yes, speed metal OGs Powermad make this 1990… 512/322-0145
  • Image: Squirrel Flower, Sour Widows

    Fri., Oct. 30, 8 p.m.

    29th Street Ballroom

    2906 Fruth, Austin Campus

Squirrel Flower’s latest album, Say a Prayer to the Gods of Getting Going, captures every emotion of life on the road: annoyed grit on “Sick Tooth,” windowpane longing on “Surfing USA,” semi-mystical mythologizing on “Highway Woman,” sing-along self-reliance on “Cleveland,” and somber yearning to stop for longer than a night on “Reelin.” Onstage, the dynamic saga moves from grunge-inspired to folk-vulnerable and back again, never losing the project’s spellbinding storytelling ethos. Read the Chronicle’s conversation with Squirrel Flower online. – Caroline Drew 000/000-0000
  • Image: All My Sons

    Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 12

    Ground Floor Theatre

    979 Springdale #122, Austin East

Ah, Halloween weekend: a great time for fears, fright, and fraught family dramas. Because the spookiest thing of all? Failing as a father, of course. Arthur Miller’s All My Sons pokes holes in the bubbly American Dream. It follows war profiteer Joe Keller (played by J. Kevin Smith), whose own hubris bites him in the butt when his sons die in WWII. The shocker? They died from faulty airplane parts Keller willingly sent into the fray. All My Sons opens Filigree Theatre’s “Legacy” themed season, appropriately highlighting what happens when pride goeth before literal falls. – Cat McCarrey 512/840-1804

    House of Torment

A quarter-century of scares hasn’t blunted Austin’s most deviously twisted haunted house, now back with two completely new houses: Return of the Abominations and Beyond the Veil.
  • Image: Kate LeSueur: “Infrastructure”

    Through Oct. 31

    Martha's

    4115 Guadalupe, Austin Midtown

Romanticizing your life can come from adding touches of whimsy, or it can come from slowing down and recognizing the existing beauty in your life. Kate LeSueur’s paintings live in the latter. Her work captures menial, everyday tasks in ways that shed a glowing light and magnifying gratitude on how lucky we are to exist. The sink full of food and flowers becomes an altar, a dedication to moments of abundance; the fuzzy blur of a napping cat becomes a guide to life, the joy of the moment; and the detritus of making sandwiches becomes a path to enlightenment. “Infrastructure”… 512/695-1437

    Fridays

    Hideout Annex

5555 N. Lamar Blvd. Unit B-103, Austin Midtown

Now that the legendary comedy stage of Hideout Theatre has left its longtime Congress locale, they’ve continued programming over at their North Lamar annex – you know, the one by the Half Price. Among those shows still kicking and cackling is the Best of Austin-winning Parallelogramophonograph, or PGraph. The troupe containing Kareem Badr, Kaci Beeler, and Roy Janik offers full-length improvised plays generated with skills earned over 20 years and 1,500 shows together. These shows? Funny! Which is all anyone can ask of a Friday night improv show. Snag tickets as soon as possible, though, because the annex – or,…

    Fridays

    Hideout Theatre & Coffeehouse

    617 Congress, Austin Downtown

Back in the year 2013, former Arts Editor Robert Fairies interviewed the Hideout’s Roy Janik on this “all-star” improv comedy team. Janik said at the time that his desire for the Big Bash, Hideout’s Friday night show for now over 13 years, was the performance be “something that you ‘have to do’ when you come to Austin.” Well, Reader: You’re obviously in Austin. Why not stop by this Congress comedy den for a knockout night of pro improv performers delivering a highly skilled showcase of games, scenes, and stories? – James Scott 512/476-1313

    Fridays

    Hideout Annex

5555 N. Lamar Blvd. Unit B-103, Austin Midtown

Finally, a comedy show that covers the three Ws: wild, wonderful, and weird! This tri-woman show from Lisa Jackson, Regina Soto, and Jessica Arjet brings impressive and offbeat improv to the Hideout’s current stage as they have since first they stepped out together. Once separate entities, the three funny ladies combined in “a beam of light, a burst of glitter, a heaven witch with a wicked sense of humor… and they fused into something none of them could be alone.” Need I say more? C’mon; let this Friday be your entrance into the Glitterverse. – James Scott
