It’s the David Lynch film with Nicolas Cage in it. Need I say more? In his only collaboration with the late great filmmaker, Cage’s Elvis-singing, snakeskin jacket-treasuring convicted felon treks across the Southern United States with longtime Lynch muse Laura Dern at his side, as the star-crossed lovers flee the devil they know (Diane Ladd, on the edge) and face plenty of new devils along the way (Willem Dafoe at perhaps his most petrifying). Though adapted from Barry Gifford’s novel of the same name, Harry Dean Stanton, Isabella Rossellini, Sheryl Lee, and, yes, speed metal OGs Powermad make this 1990 Southern Gothic feel unmistakably Lynchian: sinister, hopeful, and funny as hell.
