    Wednesdays

    Radio Coffee & Beer

4204 Menchaca, Austin South Lamar and Barton Springs

We really have no shortage of trivia events in this town full of smarties, but what grabbed my attention with this one was the quality of the prizes. First place gets $125 to spend at happenin’ host venue Radio, plus $15 to whiskey distillery Still Austin, and second place wins $75 at Radio and $15 at Still. Third place is even a good prize: a bag of high-quality Radio coffee beans and a koozie. So dust off the ol’ brain, grab some buds, and head over to Radio on Wednesdays to give it a go. Fuel up beforehand with a… 512/394-7844

    Wednesdays, 9-11 p.m.

    Oilcan's

    211 W. Fourth, Austin Downtown

At the start of her drag career, Divina host Tatiana Cholula told Qmmunity she’d be critiqued for not assimilating enough “American” culture into her acts. “Before I started Divina,” she said, “the scene was rich in amazing Latinx drag performers and artists, but there weren’t any spaces focused on them or they didn’t feel comfortable performing certain songs at certain spaces.” Thankfully, Tatiana did start Divina, and now every other Wednesday you’ll see Oilcan Harry’s stage taken over by the spirits of Latina legends like Gloria Estefan and Paulina Rubio – courtesy of local Latinx drag talent. – James Scott… 512/320-8823

    Various Locations

    Various Locations, Austin Greater Austin

AFF’s quiet nickname has always been “the last stop before award season” and never has that been more true than this year’s lineup. Oscar buzz is already swirling around Andrew Scott for true-life Shakespearian AIDS drama Elsinore, while Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti could be eying nominations for The Debut. That’s just the tip of a cinematic iceberg that includes dozens of premieres, including the first screening of Austin-made thriller Remote. With marquee films relocating to the Hogg Auditorium while the Paramount is being renovated, it’s a new screen but the same emphasis on the screenwriter’s craft at the festival…
  • Image: Malum Malus: Samhain

    Oct. 29-31 and Nov. 5-7

    The Vortex

    2307 Manor Rd., Austin East

Billing itself as Austin’s “premier Occult burlesque collective,” Malum Malus returns for its annual blast of fall weather witchlesque. Celebrating Samhain, an ancient Gaelic festival marking the end of harvest and the slide into moodier, gloomier winter, the 18+ performance art piece is masterminded by Blaise Ricin and runs six nights only at its regular home base, the Vortex. The veil between worlds is supposedly the thinnest during this Pagan holiday... and you can reasonably expect dancers to drop some veils, too. – Kimberley Jones 512/478-5282

Face fears by sharing at the open mic; experience chills and thrills with readings from Lisa Olstein, August Smith, and Taisia Kitaiskaia; creepily commiserate about the true terror that is submitting a piece for publication; or just howl at the moon with fellow readers, reveling in every bookworm’s ideal party location – late nights at the bookstore. Such is the stuff dreams are made of. – Cat McCarrey 512/243-6679

    Thu., Oct. 29

    We Luv Video

100 E. North Loop, Austin Midtown

“Gore-nography.” That’s the term Austin’s nonprofit video rental store has coined for that sicky-sweet melding of sex and violence the great Herschell Gordon Lewis created. To celebrate this new classification, Blood Shed Theater presents the original gore movie, Lewis' 1963 story of cannibalism and ancient Egyptian occultism. Unabashedly sleazy and shamelessly grisly, it’s one of the greatest made-in-Miami movies ever, and a real treat for fans of midcentury modern architecture – especially when it’s splattered with rich red blood. Cow tongues not included. – Richard Whittaker

If you ever want proof that studios know nothing, then just remember that Michael Dougherty’s horror anthology masterpiece got sent straight to DVD in 2009, even after screaming success at showings like its legendary Fantastic Fest outing. Nearly two decades later, it’s hard to imagine the spooky season without little Sam wordlessly explaining the rules for making it out of Halloween with all your candy and body parts in the right place. – Richard Whittaker 512/244-3549

And what if one existed in more than one state simultaneously? I don’t mean our lovely multi-city dwellers who call Austin and NYC/L.A. home – although love and light to you people! – but rather bodily states. This is what compels artist Via Boley in her first solo exhibition: a series of Cubist-inspired objects colliding with their own fragmented pieces over wood panel surfaces. These flawed reflective pieces echo Boley’s own experiences with shifting physical limitations. “When I look past my body, I contain multitudes,” she says. Thursdays

    Barbarella

    611 Red River, Austin Downtown

Current aesthetic trends skew a bit too close to 10 years ago – you know, the big-brim hats, stomp-clap music, and general horror at what the U.S. just elected to its highest office – so why not kick things even further back to, say, the turn of the century? Aughts and Nineties pop, rap, hip-hop, and more spin out from behind DJs Napster and Netscape’s decks and onto the Barbs dance floor. Return every Thursday for a follow-up nostalgia hit until all the evil of the 2010s & 20s fades from your frontal lobe. – James Scott 512/476-7766

Austin-based painter Lisa Loudermilk is the Austin Artist of the Month for October at Unchained.Art Contemporary Gallery. She pushes minimalism past its own limits. She calls it Baroque Modernism: paint rolled and cut with plastic tools, metallic films sealed under resin, every previous layer staying visible in the final work. The result shifts depending on where you stand and how the light hits it. On October 4, Loudermilk joins us from 12 to 4PM to introduce her work in person, as part of the gallery's ongoing Austin Artist of the Month program. Free, on view through October 31. 7372973154
