We couldn't ask for a more committed champion for public education. Allen Weeks went to work for our local schools almost two decades ago, successfully advocating to save Webb Middle School from closure. Now, he's in the middle of the same struggle, as Austin ISD considers closing Dobie Middle School and other campuses. He fought heroically through the latest grueling legislative session against Gov. Greg Abbott's voucher scheme, bringing thousands to the Save Texas Schools rallies at the Capitol. He put in a valiant effort trying to convince lawmakers to abolish the STAAR test and to provide more funding for schools across the state. The session brought wins (more funding) and losses (STAAR stuck and vouchers plowed ahead), but it's good to know folks like Weeks are committed to the fight, win or lose.
