Best Champion for Austin’s Public Defenders

Adeola Ogunkeyede

Travis County’s Public Defender’s Office is still young, and Chief Public Defender Adeola Ogunkeyede has been shaping it since its 2020 inception. She demands just treatment of defendants, but she also advocates for her own staff. They do the crucial job of keeping poor Austinites out of jail, but they struggle with their own student loans while prosecutors and private defense attorneys make much more money. This year, Ogunkeyede went to bat for them, testifying before county commissioners. The starting salary is now $85,500. Our attorney sources behind the scenes shower their leader with praise for her efforts.
