Coppola, Bogdanovich, Scorsese, Demme, Hellman, Dante: They all got early career boosts from Roger Corman, which is perhaps why his legacy as a film producer has somewhat overshadowed his legacy as a director. But the King of Cult deserves his own flowers for directing films like the Vincent Price-starring Poe cycle and this pulpy 1963 sci-fi horror. Ray Milland fully commits to the part of Dr. Xavier, an eyedrop-inventing scientist who makes the ill-advised decision to experiment on his own peepers. The results are predictably disastrous – but the getting there is an awful lot of fun. – Kimberley Jones
