Michael A. Booker: “Small Comforts"

Unfazed By Damocles by Michael A. Booker
Michael A. Booker’s archival pen and watercolor works are so atmospheric they evoke cinema, but carry the unmistakable physicality and emotion of a handheld pen. This Maryland-based artist depicts scenes of comfort, composure, and reassurance, moments of interiority that help us find control and grounding in a chaotic world. Inspired by conversations with fellow Black creatives in the Washington, D.C., area, these scenes where unease and calm coexist are brought to life with meticulous mark-making and dreamlike chromatic brilliance, all done with a humble writing implement. – Lina Fisher
