Former SNL cast member Kyle Mooney has stuck his fingers into many different weird comedy-adjacent sockets, allowing for the eclectic electricity generated to power practical-effect-laden good times. While he’s not in the director’s chair for this 2017 com-dram, Mooney was still a massive creative force as both co-screenwriter and lead actor. He plays a man whose bunker-bound childhood leaves him obsessed with the only entertainment available, a children’s program called Brigsby Bear Adventures. When this guy later finds out that his “parents” kidnapped him in infancy and created the show whole cloth for him alone, he becomes dead-set on re-creating Brigsby for all his new aboveground community to enjoy. A tribute to making movies with friends, this is a strangely sweet screening to enjoy in our incredibly AI troubled times. – James Scott
