We’re grateful for the growth of glossy galleries in our ever-modernizing city, but one shan’t discount the Dougherty, which continues to place a plethora of thought-provoking, media-spanning artworks on the walls of Austin’s oldest community arts venue. The Barton Springs center welcomes three new exhibits this month: group show “Recovering the Lost Words,” which simultaneously celebrates the natural world and memorializes words recently removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary; Zoee Xiao’s “Little Memories,” a collection of dispatches from the artist and her children’s youths; and Darla Barolini’s “The Classroom,” a series of large-scale paintings that bring to life the connection, confusion, and isolation of our school years with vibrant color and expression. – Carys Anderson
