Amy Banner Updegrove: “Passing Beauty”

In her new exhibition, Amy Banner Updegrove builds mixed-media compositions from repetition, variations, and a range of materials. In Kodachrome, you see 108 small blue and white squares placed in a 9 by 12 grid, but no two are quite the same. If you look once, they’re simply blue fields. Look again, and Updegrove’s pale blue squares seem to change identity. Is that a view of the ocean or a window? The pale palette and detailed composition throughout the artist's work draws viewers in, wondering how long they’ve been staring. – Maryam Muliaee
