Open since 1996, Threadgill’s Riverside location preserves the legacy of the Armadillo World Headquarters more literally than its North Lamar precursor on size and the memorabilia alone. Wall to wall vintage posters and photos from the likes of late pictorial historian Burton Wilson inside match gargoyle-sized armadillos on the exterior. Its sizable beer garden doesn’t quite match the AWH’s, which sat in the neighboring parking lot to the south, but jam bands and topflight singer-songwriters match up with rootsy locals in filling the 300-capacity concert area, still hosting 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson’s Ice Cream Social every SXSW. Southern food and southern music co-mingle at Sunday gospel or bluegrass brunches.
