Edward Yang’s final film is subtitled “A One and a Two,” which references the title’s meaning of “one after another.” Appropriate for this generational tale of the Jian family and their life in Aughts Taipei. It’s a rare treasure that was applauded in its time – the 2000 Cannes Film Festival awarded Yang Best Director; multiple critics named it Best Film of the Year, including Susan Sontag; and just two years later, Sight & Sound placed it among the top 10 greatest films – and is celebrated still as a major cinematic achievement, earning No. 40 on The New York Times’ list of “100 Best Movies of the 21st Century.” But what’ll keep you in your seat isn’t the awards or acclaim it’s since garnered; Yang’s feature endures for its genuine familial warmth shining through any screen it’s projected on. – James Scott
