In 1993, playwright David Henry Hwang mounted his second work Face Value, which shuttered after only eight previews. In 2007, he returned to this particular wound ready to prod and poke with stagecraft as the scalpel. Yellow Face is, in the playwright’s own words, an “unreliable memoir” about how good intentions aren’t always enough when it comes to representation in art. Blackbox theatre Ground Floor tackles the material with director Sandy Lam at the helm and Matthew Vo in the role of Hwang himself. – James Scott
