Widespread Panic emerged from the depths of the 1980s Athens music scene, brandishing a mix of Southern rock grit and progressive jams on par with the Allman Brothers Band. Now, the group descends on the University of Texas campus for a two-night Valentine’s Day weekend stint at the Moody Center. The sixpiece jam band makes its Austin arena debut, bringing a two-set display of galloping basslines from Dave Schools, gospel-infused keys from John Hermann, and fiery vocals from John Bell. Longtime lead guitarist Jimmy Herring is on a temporary hiatus as he recovers from health issues, but fill-in Nick Johnson is sure to hold his own, having previously backed Georgia rock legends Col. Bruce Hampton and Randall Bramblett. – Joseph Gonzalez
