Leave it to We Luv Video to pull out an underappreciated wintry gem for their monthly Adaptations Book Club, where they ask the age-old question: “Is the book truly better?” New Queer Cinema icon Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation) adapted the 1999 novel by Laura Kasischke, which centers on teenage Kat Connors, whose mother disappears right when she probably needs her most. Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars, Big Little Lies) gives a strong and layered performance as Kat in this coming-of-age drama with a twist and a killer soundtrack. Did it surpass the book? You be the judge. – Kat McNevins
