AFS continues its “Nope to Nazis” series with a reminder that sometimes it takes more than harsh language to fight off fascists. Brazilian filmmaker Alberto Cavalcanti had already seen his adopted home of France fall to the Third Reich when he directed this adaptation of Graham Greene’s “The Lieutenant Died Last.” In the original short story, a single brave poacher takes down an invading force of German paratroopers as they try to invade a bucolic English village: Here, the entire community is forced to take up arms when the detestable Ratzis disguise themselves as brave Tommies. Harsh but heroic, it served as a reminder then as now that we’re all in this together. – Richard Whittaker
