Vital Signs

Laurie Frick’s data-driven art delights in challenging conceptions of what algorithms can look like. Her current Ivester exhibit is no exception, taking the sort of bodily data tracked by smartwatches and morphing it into colored patterns: squares and lines conveying numerically quantified information through visually stunning pieces. Hydration patterns morph into multi-toned oil paint squares on canvas; eating habits get assigned a felt-wool color block arranged into intersecting rows and lines; even bloodwork becomes a cascade of red and white. It’s a completely different way to look at the ways your body works. – Cat McCarrey
