A Virginia Creeper song is an exhilarating trudge through knee-deep mud; an eerily slow ride on a wooden roller coaster; a fierce sword fight with dull blades. The quartet’s sludgey slow-fast rock takes its sonic cues from shoegaze and emo with a folk songwriter’s heart and a power-pop rhythm. Together, they build an uncertain universe of pastoral symbolism and gritty American realism.
