The whole of Adam Meeks’ remarkable recovery drama is a tender spot, with opiate addiction the awful ache at its center. It’s inspired by a court-run adult recovery program in rural Ohio, and real-life participants in its drug court play secondary parts; when they recount their highs and lows in support meetings, there’s no faking the feeling of hard-won triumph and rock-bottom despair. Star Will Poulter matches their vulnerability as a fresh-out-of-jail young man just starting the work to get sober. It’s a master class in soft-spoken unshowiness, and a career-best performance from Poulter that deserves to be part of award season conversations. – Kimberley Jones
