Joe Ely used to relish his tale of picking up a wayward hitchhiker along a lonely stretch of the alien highways and byways of West Texas: Townes Van Zandt produced a vinyl copy of his 1968 bow For the Sake of the Song from a backpack. Ely’s Flatlanders brother Butch Hancock, who’s run this TVZ (1944-1997) hootenanny for three decades, must count a half-dozen stories like that. Last month at South Lamar’s church of ultimate compositions, third Flatlander Jimmie Dale Gilmore played Hancock, the now late Ely, and even Jimmie Dale Gilmore. He’s sure to show amongst Hancock’s “Friends” to summon The Songfather. Kiss the ring(s). – Raoul Hernandez
