Kicking off their new Essential Cinema series centered on a Nineties wave of Black filmmaker graduates from UCLA, aka the L.A. Rebellion, is Charles Burnett’s film about a guest overstaying his welcome. His third feature, following My Brother’s Wedding, which has fellow series feature Julie Dash (Daughters of the Dust, Feb. 17-22) as first assistant director, the 1990 Danny Glover-led dark comedy offers magical realism as well as simmering sweat-soaked drama. Glover as the unsettling Harry arrives at his friend Gideon (Paul Butler) and wife Suzie’s (Mary Alice) doorstep, bringing with him a Southern wind that threatens to upend their life in South Central L.A. – James Scott
