City Theatre Austin enters its 20th season with a classic production of To Kill a Mockingbird. Based on the iconic Harper Lee novel, this Southern gothic bildungsroman follows young Scout as her father, lawyer Atticus Finch, defends a young Black man accused of sexual assault by a white woman. Through the trial and her experiences around town, Scout and the audience confront racism as well as how to act on our moral imperatives. Long used as a high school syllabus staple, the themes haven’t stopped resonating in the 35 years since Christopher Sergel adapted the novel for the stage. – Flora Belle Farr
