To Have and to Hold

If you’ve seen Maestro, then you’ve gleaned that, for legendary composer Leonard Bernstein, marriage was ... complicated. This program, led and narrated by his daughter, Jamie Bernstein, compiles a half-dozen-plus works centered on the theme of marriage and partnership, from wedded bliss (Saint-Saëns’ Wedding Cake, Op. 76, Mendelssohn’s "Wedding March" from A Midsummer Night’s Dream) to gloom and doom. Filed in the latter camp is Maestro’s one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti, which The New Yorker’s Alex Ross described as “a poppy satire of a dead-end suburban marriage”; it forms the centerpiece of Austin Symphony Orchestra’s performance. – Kimberley Jones
