To Be Seen

Everyone got through the pandemic in different ways. Some people struggled to keep their business going or found new ways to help their community. Documentarian David Liu decided to chronicle the struggles of those doing both. The first-time filmmaker focused on the chefs behind four very different restaurants around the city – Sarah Heard and Nathan Lemley of Foreign & Domestic, Fiore Tedesco of L’Oca d’Oro, Evan LeRoy and Sawyer Lewis of LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue, and Thaison Nguyen of Pho Craft – to track how they responded to the pandemic. It’s more than a story of to-go containers and making ends meet. It’s an exploration of why the need to eat together, even if it’s with strangers on neighboring tables that we never talk to, is so important. – Richard Whittaker
