American cinema could use more directors like Sydney Pollack, who made juicy, commercial pictures for adults. Eight of them starred Robert Redford, and this might be the best; it’s certainly a sterling example of the Seventies paranoia boom. Redford plays a CIA analyst on the run, trying to unravel a “how-high-does-the-conspiracy-go” plot while still finding time to seduce Faye Dunaway. It’s a little dated, sure, but still a marvelous thriller, and Robert Redford, may he rest in peace, arguably never looked hotter than he did here in his popped collar peacoat. – Kimberley Jones
