Renate Reinsve’s Julie is hardly deserving of the superlative in this film’s title, but it’s easy to feel as such when you survey the collateral damage stacking up amid your quest for self-discovery. Not far from the depressed actress she enlivens in Joachim Trier’s freshly Oscar-nominated Sentimental Value, Reinsve’s character in his equally stellar preceding project is aimless: cycling between jobs, unsatisfied in a loving, long-term relationship, and unsure how to exist by herself in the filmmaker’s beloved Oslo. The Worst Person in the World doesn’t wrap in as tidy of a bow as its successor, but its empathetic, unceasing slice of life will leave you just as teary-eyed. – Carys Anderson
