Few literary figures of the mid-20th century remain as controversial and enigmatic as Gertrude Stein. Lauded for her radical works of literature like The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and her championing of avant-garde art through her Paris salon, Stein was also condemned for how she lionized Nazi collaborators like Marshal Pétain. This new exhibition, curated by senior lecturer in Modernism at the University of Liverpool Dr. Sophie Oliver, attempts to examine the writer through her works, her possessions, and her collections. – Richard Whittaker
