The Wailing

Despite the lesson of Jaws’ scant onscreen shark sightings, horror films today still too often trade mystery for easy jump scares. This 2016 supernatural South Korean film instead spreads its frights perfectly even across a 156-minute run time, letting the slow-building unease generated by cop Jong-goo’s investigation into a mysterious infection get you good and freaked out by the time the big BOO! moment hits. Of course, there’s still plenty of bone-chilling images until then, including haunting shrines, reanimated corpses, and demonic suppositions. Screens at Hyperreal Film Club as part of their Halloween programming. – James Scott
