The Virgin Suicides

Sofia Coppola’s dreamlike adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ tale of suburban malaise has served as a touchstone for disaffected girls everywhere since 1999. Coppola’s first collaboration with Kirsten Dunst was the beginning of a fruitful partnership that’s given us Marie Antoinette and The Beguiled. Both women have a particular talent for melancholy that’s on full display in this fable (soundtracked by French electronic band Air) about a group of neighborhood boys’ obsession with five mysterious sisters living under the repressive thumb of conservative parents. – Lina Fisher
