The Straight Story

Known more for his outsider art and wild visuals, the late David Lynch gets rarer praise for his incredibly empathic filmmaking. No place is this skill better exemplified than in his outing with the House of Mouse. This Disney-released live-action picture started as a true-story screener based on real person Alvin Straight’s 260-mile trek on a lawnmower to see his brother one last time. Lynch uses the film to portray aging vulnerably, with each little vignette Straight goes on emphasizing how our connections to those around us are what define our very lives. A love letter to middle America – its wide open spaces familiar to anyone who enjoys a good Lynchian driving scene – this is a perfect all-ages intro to the director whose work remains totemic to our modern media landscape. – James Scott
