The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

It’s kind of wild to think of a movie you grew up watching on Nickelodeon being inducted into the indie theatre rotation as an adult, but that’s the way time goes, I guess. Stephen Hillenburg’s 2004 classic is less than a tight 90 minutes and hits the marks of any great caper with expert pacing, jokes, and, of course, the heart of gold that made the show so wonderful. SpongeBob and Patrick must clear Mr. Krabs’ name after Plankton frames him for stealing Neptune’s crown, requiring them to venture from Bikini Bottom to Shell City, meeting obstacles and helpers along the way – including Neptune’s daughter Mindy (Scarlett Johansson). Also: Who could forget the surreal live action cameo of David Hasselhoff as a speedboat? That scene definitely stuck in my 7-year-old brain. – Lina Fisher
