The Shining

What results from putting a dysfunctional family into a remote resort hotel and snowing them in with all the ghosts haunting the hotel’s many rooms? Evil, apparently, and lots of it, as depicted in cinematic impresario Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of literary auteur Stephen King’s iconic novel. Though the writer always resented the film for its less sentimental take on patriarch Jack Torrance, one can’t argue how impactful a performance Jack Nicholson delivers – an unhinged performer in his absolute prime. Shelley Duvall stuns as a mother in crisis, attacked not only by hotel horrors but also her own axe-wielding husband, while a young Danny Lloyd delivers psychic kid as well as any child actor could. Whether a yearly rewatch or your first-ever sighting, catching this flick on the big AFS screen is worth the $15 ticket. – James Scott
