A poignant scene from the making-of documentary about 1986 Cannes Grand Prix winner The Sacrifice shows acclaimed director Andrei Tarkovsky declaring himself to be immortal and having no fear of death. He may not have feared it, but he did die not long after, and this was his last film. Tarkovsky was correct about his immortality, though; his apocalyptic masterpiece, moving not only with its narrative but its visual journey through arresting shots evoking dread and sorrow, weaves threads that connect us over 40 years later.
