Sometimes, a movie is allowed to be bad, and that’s specifically when I liked watching it as a teenager. Joel Schumacher’s adaptation of pal Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic gothic musical dazzles the senses with ornate costumes, lavish sets, and Patrick Wilson’s singing voice. That it also disappoints the senses with muddy lighting, sludgy plot pacing, and Gerard Butler’s singing voice is, well... Your mileage may vary with this one! Perhaps Alamo’s Crafthouse offering will upgrade this goofy Aughts creation as audience members will be able to make a red paper rose as well as practice calligraphy during the screening. – James Scott
