A touch of Stephin Merritt, a dash of Galaxie 500: Life of Riley, the debut album by the Love Variants, channels 120 Minutes-era jangle across 28 minutes of smooth-sailing dream pop. “Drifter,” as expected, opens the LP with crowning keys and a delicate vocal hymn; “Golden Age” rocks and sways with snappy drums and a Cleaners From Venus arpeggio; “Sea of Memories” beefs up those ethereal melodies with the occasional thunderous strum. The worst of the genre skates by on vibes, but the Love Variants hold your attention with crisp production and a brisk runtime. Mr. Breakfast and Silver Hour open this record release show. – Carys Anderson
