If you’re going to make a documentary about the rise in book bans in America in the 2020s, it stands to reason Texas will figure prominently – and that Texan librarians will emerge the heroes of the piece. Directed by Kim A. Snyder, The Librarians zeros in on right-wing efforts to remove from shelves books that don’t fall in with conservatives’ agenda – meaning books about race, books written by people of color, books about LGBTQIA issues, books written by queer authors, books that acknowledge a woman’s right to bodily autonomy – you know the drill. The film airs on PBS’ Independent Lens next February, but catch it now as part of Austin Film Society’s Doc Nights series, in partnership with ATX Librarians Social Club. – Kimberley Jones
