The second Larry McMurtry novel made into a film after the Paul Newman-starring Hud, this melancholic coming-of-age story stars a fetal Jeff Bridges and a beautifully icy Cybill Shepherd as confused high schoolers inhabiting a tiny Texas town heading for ghost status. Highlights include Timothy Bottoms’ Sonny having a really sad affair with a pathetic Cloris Leachman, the coach’s wife; and many dark coming-of-age sequences.
