The Invisible Mammal

Bats are integral to Austin’s identity, with their wingspans against the violet sunset as iconic an ATX image as Matthew McConaughey in a cowboy hat drinking Lone Star. These incredible creatures get featured in this conservation-centric doc from filmmaker and producer Kristin Tièche, which follows biologists as they set out to save a North American bat population from white-nose syndrome, a deadly fungal disease. This women-led effort becomes complicated, however, by the COVID-19 pandemic, but the film’s story is one of hope for the connection between “bat conservation and preventing the spread of infectious disease.” Cast and crew join this local premiere for a post-film Q&A, including Bat Conservation International Chief Scientist Dr. Winifred Frick. – James Scott
