Tsai Ming-Liang, the Taiwanese auteur best known for slow cinema classics like Goodbye, Dragon Inn, here delves into the world of the movie musical in an eerily prescient tale from 1998. Two lonely quarantined neighbors’ apartments are accidentally connected by a hole that allows them to communicate and fall in love, slowly, through jazzy musical numbers, in a postapocalyptic Taipei ravaged by a cockroach pandemic. Not the plot you’d expect from the slow cinema master, but nevertheless convincingly brought to life by his quotidian aesthetic in this newly restored 35mm print. – Lina Fisher
