Negotiating your adult life with the culture that raised you is a difficult prospect, particularly when that’s a historically marginalized community you’re not quite sure how you fit in anymore. Such is the foundational idea in this Sherman Alexie-penned and -directed feature from 2002, where protagonist Seymour (Evan Adams, Smoke Signals) must return to the Spokane reservation he grew up on following the death of a friend. His career as a poet and his white boyfriend are only a few of the issues that make his arrival fraught – externalizing what’s so far been an internal conflict.
