Poster artists don’t get enough credit. Take Italian designer Renato Casaro, who re-created the perfect image to define Dario Argento’s twisting giallo. It’s the aftermath of one of myriad gruesome murders, as Mirella Banti lies with her head back, long hair flowing, and a trickle of blood around her neck from where the black-clad assassin has slashed her with his straight razor. Like Argento’s 1970 breakout success The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, Tenebrae follows an American author in Italy. This time it’s Tony-nominated Broadway star Anthony Franciosa as thriller writer Peter Neal, whose latest novel seems to have become the inspiration for a bloodthirsty maniac. Casaro’s selection of that one image sums up the disturbing mix of terror and beauty that defines Argento’s psychosexual masterpiece. – Richard Whittaker
