Tampopo

This 1987 cult classic spurred thousands of food fetishes worldwide with a particular scene involving a raw egg yolk. Beyond erotics though, it’s a delightful comedy of vignettes anchored by a truck driver and a ramen shop owner in search of the perfect noodle recipe. Much like Altman’s Short Cuts and Scorsese’s After Hours, Tampopo hops lightly from one narrative thread to the next in an episodic exploration of the importance of food in all contexts, from love and war to business and friendship, all with an incredibly cool stylistic sensibility. – Lina Fisher
