Sumi-e Black Ink Painting

More goes into the creation of sumi-e than implied by its two-part name. (Sumi = black ink and e = painting.) Introduced to Japan by Zen monks, according to sumi-e.it, this art form forgoes preparation in order to produce a painting free of superfluous factors. Or, in fewer words, less is best. That’s a lot of pressure to get your brushstrokes right on the first move, but at this Austin Public Library-presented lesson, you’ll have mindfulness teacher Sari Fujimaru leading you. By the end of the class, there’ll be a beautiful black-and-white landscape painting made by your hands with the perfect amount of brushstrokes. – James Scott
